The digital watch was inexpensive to manufacture and could be produced in mass. It created a whole new market by making watches inexpensive enough for all classes of people. The Swiss did not respond to this new competition and began to lose their market share. The Swiss watchmakers still produced high end watches for the wealthy, but did not compete for the lower end market. In the 1980’s the Swiss watchmakers began to realize they needed to change their business model to fit in to the new global market place. They needed to not only change their views of the market but the infrastructure of watch manufacturing. In order to compete on a global level they needed to improve their technology, design products that would appeal to new markets and be able to compete with other companies both in quality and cost. The development of Swatch ® allowed one company, the Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries (SMN), to do just that. SMN developed a product that was appealing to a younger target market. Their new design, distribution and production strategies created a niche market that became popular worldwide. The company developed an advertising campaign that was new to the watch industry and was strongly directed at a younger audience. INTRODUCTION l. Attention Getter: According to the Forbes website, 74. 6 percent adults in the world are obese and the United States has the highest rates. II. Relevance: Obesity occurs all throughout the world, and with each passing year the rates are higher. We see obesity everywhere, even here in UTPA. It is getting to the oint where we think it is normal to see a bigger person walking or sitting next to us, but the truth is it is not normal. In fact, obesity is highly dangerous to our health. Ill. Credibility: I have done extensive research on obesity and have found many shocking statistics and facts on this issue. In addition, I have an Aunt suffering from obesity and that led her to having diabetes. IV. Propositional Statement: Obesity is a growing problem in the United States and in the Valley. I propose we encourage ourselves, and the people we love, to have ealthier eating habits so it will help people control or avoid obesity. BODY Point One: The first part of the problem is that obesity is a growing health issue, and many adults and young people are victims of it. A. According to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a cross-sectional telephone survey of no institutionalized adults ages 18 years or older conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of obesity between 1991 and 1998 increased in all 50 states in the United States in both men and women, and across all age groups. Notably, only 4 states had obesity rates of or higher in 1991, but by 1998, 37 states had exceeded that level. The highest prevalence of obesity was found among women of minority groups. B. Data from the Texas Health Institute and Methodist Healthcare Ministries indicates more than 15 million Texans will become obese by 2040 if obesity prevention efforts are not adopted immediately. The report notes that while dramatic obesity increases are noted in all ethnic and age groups, obesity rate increases in young adults have risen more than 10% in Just 7 years. As this population ages, they iseases that accompany obesity, like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and respiratory ailments. Transition: Texas ranks as the 15th most obese state in the nation, but we do not have to stay that way. Obesity is something we have the power to change. Point Two: The second part of the problem is that many people prefer fattier foods because of the cheaper cost rather than a healthy more expensive meal. A. According to The Lancet, in the U. S. for example, as food has become cheaper during the past several decades, especially foods high in fat and sugar, obesity rates ave risen and obesity rates among the poor, who are more likely to depend on high- fat, high-sugar foods for their meals, are substantially higher than the rates seen in higher income groups. To improve the diets of people on low income, healthy food must be made available and cheap. Instead of promoting sugar and grain production fruits and vegetables should be promoted and more support sh ould be given to programs distributing fruits and vegetables for free to schools and low income groups. B. According to Tufts University Health and Nutrition Letter, it used to be that uying fresh, unprocessed foods saved you money as well. Now, however, the cost of more nutritious foods is climbing?even outstripping the rate of inflation. Meanwhile, at least until the latest grocery price spikes, Junk food has been getting cheaper?not good news for a nation with an obesity epidemic. Transition: It is clear obesity is a major problem that needs to be addressed. A solution is desperately needed. Point Three: The solution I propose as I mentioned before is that we encourage ourselves and the people we care for to make healthier eating choices so it will help hem control or avoid obesity. A. Even though it might be a little more costly to buy healthier foods it is better for you, and in the long run, you will not have to spend money going to doctors because you did not pay attention to your eating habits and you will end up saving money. B. It is easier when a couple of us start eating healthy rather than Just by doing it alone. If you influence your friends and family into eating better, it becomes easier because in one of your weak moments, they can help you, and you can help them if it was the other way around. You will also not see your friends or family with fatty foods, and so therefore, you will have fewer temptations. CONCLUSION Transition: In conclusion eating habits among people. II. Solution Summary: I ask you consider my proposed solution to encourage ourselves and others to start eating in healthier ways. In doing this many more people will avoid and control obesity. Ill. Several bottlers manufactured and distributed Dew, in two different sizes costing 5 and 15 cents respectively, complete with the then-famous label featuring Gran'Pappy the Hillbilly shooting at a man running out of an outhouse. Drowning despite Dew's strong sales, Tip approached Pepsi-Cola in the early 1960's to sell the Mountain Dew brand. However, the product was in direct competition with Pepsi's own lemon-flavored drink- Teem. So, the owners went back to the drawing board- they reduced the amount of carbonation and added more sugar and caffeine, as well as mixing in enough orange juice to remove it from the "lemon-lime soda" category. Thus, Mountain Dew as we know it was born, and Pepsi bought Dew's new brew on September 2nd, 1964. The revamping of Mountain dew as a brand was awarded to BBDO, a global advertising agency. The Ad campaigns were targeted on the youth segment that projected Mountain dew as one of the best brands to stick with. Mountain Dew quickly became Pepsi's second best-selling drink (next to Pepsi itself), and a new advertising campaign featured 'Willy "Gran'Pappy" Hillbilly', along with all his yokel kin, encouraging Dew drinkers to "Yahooooo- Drink Mountain Dew! It'll tickle yer innards!" By the early 70's, however, it was clear that Willy the Hillbilly had run out of steam, so Mountain Dew's image was again redesigned, this time appealing to the young outdoors-type. The bottles were changed yet again to reflect this new attitude; and the public got their first glimpse at the now-famous "wavy" logo, which would grace bottles of Mountain Dew to decades to come. The painting I chose to critique is Interior with a Book. This painting was instantly appealing to me. The painting focuses on an empty chair in a room next to a table. On top of the table there is a cup closest to the chair. Next to that there is an open book, and on the right edge of the painting there is an empty plate on the table. If you look out the window, you will see a big green field. The reason this painting was so appealing to was because this field looks like a golf course to me. I can see a sand trap on the left edge of the painting close to the house the picture is taken from. Also, there is what appears to be a winding path coming down the center of the field which could be a cart path leading to a green.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The painting appears to be done in oils which would be a good choice for this painting. Painting with oils allows the painter to blend colors together and adds a lot of depth to the picture. This is imperative for many of the objects in this pai nting such as the field and the sky. Interior with a Book looks to be a representational painting but one could argue that there are some parts that are nonobjective or abstract. A person can see most of the images in the painting and they are forms in the natural world, thus making it a representational painting. However, there are two black spots that appear to be outside the window that I cannot make out exactly what they are, therefore maybe making this part nonobjective. On the other hand, with this picture looking so much like a golf course to me these two black spots could represent distorted golfers getting ready to chip in a ball, making this part abstract. One of the properties of this painting is that the field is made up of an analogous harmony. The field is made up of green, yellow-green, and yellow. The effect of this is that the field appears to have different shades of green grass, such as a rough, a fairway, and a green. Another property of this painting is the asymmetrical balance. The painting is heavier to the left because the chair, being the central image in the painting, is to the left of it.
